Kolkata giants East Bengal showcased a second successful professional performance away from home and on the hills of the North East, when they emerged 3-1 winners over Shillong Lajong at the JL Nehru stadium in Shillong, Meghalaya.

In game eight of the 12th Hero I-League, the red & golds rode on a first half-brace by Kerala striker Jobby Justin and a second-half strike from Bidyasagar Singh to thwart a spirited Shillong side, who got one back in the second half through left wing back Rakesh Pradhan.

Shillong was on the ball from the get-go as captain Samuel Lalmuanpuia’s super strike off a free-kick in the danger zone outside the box, ricocheted off the QEB woodwork with goalkeeper Rakshit Dagar soundly beaten.

Quite against the run of play though, it was East Bengal who took an early lead. From Lalrindika Ralte’s left-footed free-kick, Kerala frontman and Hero of the Match Jobby Justin leapt up to connect with a perfectly placed and timed header, which beat Neithovilie Chalieu in the Shillong goal all ends up.

The goal spurred the Shillong boys even further and they put the East Bengal side under sustained pressure with a wave of attacks. Samuel Lyngdoh’s crisp strike from 25 yards out in the 23rd minute was blocked by Dagar and captain Lalmuanpuia’s punch after Kamalpreet had given the ball away inside the red & golds half, were notable in this period. There was a spell when Shillong forced three corners in the space of 15 mins but could not find the equaliser.

It was then in the 41st minute when Jobby helped Kolkata giants double the lead from a counter attack. Mexican Enrique Esqueda who had a relatively quiet game, entered the box and his attempted cross hit a Lajong defender and looped up into the box. Jobby rose first to head the ball down and it deflected off a Lajong defender towards Esqueda again who promptly lobbed back to Jobby who volleyed to beat Neitho on the bounce and lodge the ball into the Lajong net.

After the lemon break, Shillong carried on with their attacking forays. Samuel Lyngdoh created and missed the most for Shillong today but he overall had a good game. In between QEB missed a couple of chances through Brandon and Laldanmawia Ralte.

In the 71st minute, Shillong got a goal back when the tireless left wing-back Rakesh Pradhan rose to connect a perfect header off a Hnamte corner. Shillong’s joy was shortlived however as QEB struck again a couple of minutes later through substitute Bidyasagar Singh.

Shillong kept on pressing as Samuel Lyngdoh’s freakish shot from distance was tipped by Dagar to kiss the QEB bar and go out for a corner. Alison even brought on Bonison to replace Hnamte in the 91st minute, but it was QEB’s day and they left the field with full three points.

Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium in Shillong will now play host to arguably a more formidable Quess East Bengal on Thursday, November 1, 2018. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 PM.

Mexican striker Enrique Esqueda also got on the scoresheet twice for QEB in his first competitive game in India. If anything, the Kolkata giants would have definitely settled down in the hills much better by now, negating any home advantage that Shillong would have, barring the artificial turf at the Nehru stadium and passionate and vocal fans.

Asst. Coach Mario said during the pre-game chat, “ Our team is confident after the first win against Neroca FC and we hope that we continue with the momentum even tomorrow. Shillong Lajong is a good team and we respect them as our opponents. We will try to play a good game and try to win three points.”

The enticing Hero I-League fixture which failed to find a winner last season, saw East Bengal (QEB) coming away with a 2-0 win against the hosts Neroca FC, in match two of the 12th Hero I-League, played at Imphal’s Khuman Lampak stadium today (October 27, 2018).

The game between the fourth-placed Kolkata side and second-placed Neroca from last year’s edition, gave enough evidence of the quality the two sides possess but the day belonged to QEB who logged full points on what would have been a satisfactory display for newly appointed Spanish coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia.

Esqueda stamped his class on the Hero I-League early with a classy finish in the 10th minute of the match. Off a long throw from wing-back Manoj Mohammad into the box from the left flank, Aryn Williams tried to head clear but his effort only managed to find Esqueda in the middle of the box. The Mexican brought it down with his chest beautifully, turned and nailed a right footer on the bounce over an outstretched Boerchio in the Neroca goal.

With the hosts down early, the otherwise quality game saw some needless frayed tempers through the game. Katsumi was clearly the target of some needle and in all three players including Eduardo Ferriera, Singham Subash and Manoj got themselves booked in the three flare-ups which happened across the two halves. The home team lost Katsumi to injury just before the end of the first half to further dent their plans.

Neroca had the lion’s share of possession through the game but could not create enough clear chances. Midfielder Malemngamba Meetei was guilty of missing their best chance in the 25th minute when off a wonderful ball by Katsumi Yusa out to the left flank, Singham Subash floated a cross which Rakshit Dagar in the QEB goal made heavy weather of.

Malemn on the rebound with the goalkeeper down and out, essayed a feeble effort which was saved on the goal-line by Yami Longwah. QEB were clearly looking happy to sit back on the lead however, the threat of Esqueda kept rearing itself up when in the 42nd minute he found Yami in the clear inside the box with a delectable lob, but the youngster could not reap rewards.

Then in the injury time, he latched on to a blooper by Rojen Meetei in the Neroca defence and struck across the goal from far beating the goalkeeper but missing the target.

He was not to be denied in the 48th minute however, when Ralte was adjudged to be brought down inside the box by Denechandram Meetei. The Mexican converted with a powerful strike.

Eduardo, in the 73rd minute, had Neroca’s best chance of the half, when he executed a perfect central defender’s header off a corner, but the powerful strike caught Esqueda’s leg and sailed over the bar.

Hero of the match Esqueda was deservedly given a break in the dying minutes of injury time and QEB came off deserving winners.

EAST BENGAL : Rakshit Dagar, Lalramchullova, Johnny Acosta, Borja Perez, Manoj Muhammad (U-22), Kamalpreet Singh (U-22), Laldanmawia Ralte (C) (Surabuddin Mollick-71'), Lalrindika Ralte, Yami Longvah (U-22) (Brandon Vanlalremdika-61'), Enrique Esqueda (K.Bidyasagar Singh (U-22)-92'), Jobby Justin

Kolkata giants East Bengal are all set to renew their love affair with the Hero I-League as they get ready to face NEROCA FC at Imphal’s Khuman Lumpak stadium on October 27, 2018.

Spanish coach, Alejandro Menendez Garcia and had a very successful pre-season under him in Malaysia where they won three matches and drew one. Coach Garcia has also had immense success in Thailand and China and would be looking to help the Red & Golds from Kolkata break their Hero I-League jinx.

He has a highly talented squad of players at his disposal too to help them achieve that dream. In goal, coach Garcia has options between Rakshit Dagar, Mirshad and Ubaid C.K., all of whom have had their days under the bar. Then there is the trio of Bali Gagandeep (forward), Senegalese Kassim Aidara (midfield) and Kamalpreet (defender) secured from defending champions Minerva Punjab FC. The two Ralte’s Laldanmawia and Lalrindika will look to martial the midfield along with Aidara and local boy Yami Longwah.

However, the two trump cards up coach Garcia’s sleeve will undoubtedly be Mexican striker Enrique Esqueda and Costa Rican defender Johnny Acosta. While Acosta, who played all three group matches for his country in this year’s FIFA World Cup Finals, will be only the second footballer in India currently to have played in a senior FIFA World Cup, Mexican Esqueda’s credentials seem even more impressive.

The striker has not only played in the Copa America for his country but has the distinction ofscoring goals against clubs like Real Madrid, AC Milan and Manchester City in competitive international club football. For QEB to fulfill their I-League dreams they will surely have to score many goals and Esqueda might just be the answer to that problem.

EB’s coach Alejandro Garcia also exuded confidence in the pre-match presser saying, “We are very confident before tomorrow’s match. We know that we can win the match. This is a very difficult opening but we hope to get three points.” He also disclosed that Syrian midfield general Mahmoud Al-Amna had not travelled to Imphal due to personal reasons.

Match two of the season between Neroca FC & Quess East Bengal is scheduled at 2 PM on October 27, 2018 and it will be telecast LIVE & Exclusive on Star Sports 3, HotStar and Jio TV.
